Why can't I reply to this Instagram DM?

Updated July 17, 2026

You typed a reply, hit Send, and BetterReply told you the reply window has closed. Nothing is broken, and you can still reach this person. Here’s what the window is and the fastest way around it.

The rule, in one sentence

Instagram only lets apps send a DM within 24 hours of that person’s last message to you. The clock restarts every time they message you, so an active conversation never hits the wall. It only shows up when you come back to a thread a day or more after their last message.

This is Meta’s rule, not ours, and it applies to every inbox tool on the market. The Instagram app itself has no such limit. That gap is your way out.

What to do right now

  1. 1On the send error, click Open on Instagram. BetterReply copies your typed reply and opens the person’s profile in a new tab.
  2. 2Tap Message on their profile and paste. Sent, window or no window.
  3. 3Back in BetterReply, mark the conversation as replied so it leaves your queue.

Or just wait. The moment they message you again, the 24-hour window reopens and you can reply straight from BetterReply.

Why Instagram does this

Spam. Without the window, a tool could collect everyone who ever DMed a business and blast them with promotions forever. Meta decided that a DM from someone is permission to respond promptly, not permission to message them for life, so it enforces the cutoff on every app that sends messages on your behalf.

The 7-day window for human replies

Meta grants an extension for replies a real person types (as opposed to automated messages): up to 7 days after the contact’s last message. It has to be approved by Meta for the messaging connector an app uses. BetterReply already requests it on every manual reply you send, so once that approval lands, replies within 7 days will simply start working. Nothing for you to set up.

Comments are different

Public comment replies have no time window. Private replies to a comment follow their own rule: Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment being posted.

Frequently asked questions

Why does BetterReply say the reply window has closed?+

Instagram only lets apps send a DM within 24 hours of that person's last message to you. If their last message is older than that, Meta rejects the send no matter which tool you use. You can still reply from the Instagram app itself, which has no window.

Does the 24-hour window reset?+

Yes. Every message the person sends you restarts the clock. An active back-and-forth never hits the limit; it only appears when you return to a conversation a day or more after their last message.

Can I still message the person at all?+

Yes, from the Instagram app. The limit only applies to messages sent through the API, meaning any third-party tool. Open their profile, tap Message, and send it yourself. BetterReply copies your typed reply when you click Open on Instagram, so you can paste it straight in.

What is the 7-day human reply window?+

Meta allows replies typed by a real person up to 7 days after the contact's last message, once it has approved that feature for the messaging connector an app uses. BetterReply requests it automatically on every manual reply, so it will start working as soon as the approval is in place. Automated messages never qualify, which is a Meta rule.

Do comment replies have the same window?+

No. Public comment replies have no time limit. Private replies to a comment follow a separate rule: one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment being posted.
