Instagram's free comment-to-DM is here. Do you still need ManyChat?

August 5, 2026 · 9 min read

Mostly, no. Meta Business Suite now includes a free comment-to-message automation that will, in Meta's own words, "send a message reply to comments on your posts that contain specific keywords or phrases" on Facebook and Instagram (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026). That one automation is the core mechanic many creators were paying ManyChat $14 to $29 a month on annual billing to run (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). What the free tool does not do: draft replies in your voice, cover any platform outside Meta's own apps, or answer the rest of your inbox. Whether you still need a paid tool comes down to whether you need any of that. Here is the boundary, drawn from Meta's own help pages.

Disclosure

We build BetterReply, one of the paid tools this article compares. Every claim about Meta's free tool and about ManyChat below comes from their own pages, checked July 2026, and the section on when the free tool is enough means exactly what it says.

What Meta's free comment-to-message actually does

Open Meta Business Suite on desktop, go to Inbox, then Automations, and you get a menu of ready-made templates. The one creators are making tutorials about is called Comment to message. Someone comments your keyword on a post, Meta sends them the message you wrote. There is no third-party app to authorize and no bill, because it is part of Business Suite, which costs nothing.

The same Automations menu covers the service basics, all read on Meta's help pages in July 2026:

  • Keyword replies to incoming messages. An automation fires when a DM contains up to 5 keywords or phrases you pick, and the reply can include "photos, videos, buttons, links and other personalizations."
  • Greetings and coverage: instant replies for first-time messages, away messages, and templates for FAQs, hours, location, and contact information.
  • Do-it-yourself combinations. You can build a custom automation from a trigger (a new message arrives, a label is added, a conversation is assigned) and an action (send a message, add a label, mark the thread), and housekeeping templates flag unanswered messages and auto-assign conversations to admins.
  • Scope: Meta's overview page describes automations that respond "across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp," and the setup guide covers managing messages on Facebook and Instagram.

For delivering a link, a discount code, or a lead magnet when someone comments a keyword, that is the whole job. Until this went mainstream, the same mechanic was the headline reason to pay for a comment-to-DM tool at all. And it is not a loss leader with a meter hiding behind it. Meta wants business conversations happening inside its own apps, so the incentive runs toward giving the basic mechanic away.

When the free tool is genuinely enough

If Instagram and Facebook are your only public platforms, you run a handful of keyword campaigns, and the DM is the same link and sentence every time, stop reading and go set it up. You do not need ManyChat for that anymore, and you do not need BetterReply either. The money a keyword funnel makes comes from the offer and the post, not from which tool delivers the DM. The playbook in turning Instagram comments into customers works the same with Meta's free automation.

That is a real and common situation, not a consolation prize. A creator selling one digital product to an Instagram audience, sending PRICE commenters a checkout link, gets nothing from a paid tool that the free automation does not already deliver. Put a number on it: for that creator, the right monthly spend on comment-to-DM software in 2026 is $0. And note that ManyChat's own free plan is not the fallback here: it covers 25 active contacts a month, which one decent post exhausts (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026).

Where the free tool stops

The edges are not in the tutorials. They are in Meta's own help pages, and every limit below was read there in July 2026.

  • The message is fixed. You write it once and every commenter gets the same reply. Nothing in the Inbox Automations documentation mentions AI drafting; the automation sends your template.
  • Keyword matching is strict. For keyword message automations, "keywords are case-sensitive, and an automated message will not be sent unless the keywords match exactly." Each automation holds at most 5 keywords or phrases, and the same keyword can only be used in one automation.
  • Keyword replies can wait. Meta's docs say "Inbox will automatically send a keyword automation to a message after 15 minutes unless you personally respond before then." A person expecting an instant link may be 15 minutes into something else by the time it lands.
  • Automations can collide. Per Meta, "When both a custom keyword automation and a template automation are turned on and triggered, we'll send the template response but not the custom keyword automated response." Your greeting template can beat your keyword reply.
  • Setup for comment-to-message is desktop only, per Meta's own note, and the documentation is thin. Meta's setup page says the trigger is specific keywords or phrases while its overview page says hashtags.
  • It ends at Meta's wall. The automations respond across Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plus comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. Nothing in the Inbox Automations pages covers YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads, or email.

Meta's AI story is also not inside this tool. Instagram is gradually rolling out AI Auto Replies, a creator AI feature that answers messages from a knowledge base you assemble, but it is mobile-app only, "being gradually introduced," and Meta itself warns that "messages generated by AI may not be accurate or appropriate" (help.instagram.com, checked July 2026). Meta Business Agent, the business-side AI, pauses your existing automations when you turn it on rather than upgrading them (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026).

The edges show up on your best nights. A reel runs, a few hundred comments land while you sleep, and the keyword hits all get their template. Everything else in that pile, the questions, the objections, the two comments that are actually brand inquiries, stays exactly where it was, because a template automation only answers the comments you predicted. The better the post does, the bigger the unanswered remainder.

Two details Meta's pages do not answer, so this article will not either: whether the comment-to-message automation also leaves a public reply under the comment, and whether it covers comments on ads as well as organic posts. The help pages describe the message reply and stop there (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026). If either detail decides it for you, test it on your own page before you build a launch around it.

None of this is a scandal. A free template engine behaves like a free template engine. The question is which of these edges you will actually hit. If automation limits worry you in general, the ground rules are the same for every tool, including Meta's own; see is Instagram DM automation safe.

What ManyChat still adds

ManyChat's product is the flow builder: multi-step sequences with conditions, follow-ups, and integrations, across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS, and email. If your funnel is more than one message, or it lives on WhatsApp, that depth is what you are paying for, and Meta's free tool does not attempt it.

  • Billing is per active contact: on annual billing $14 a month covers 250 contacts, $29 covers 2,500, $69 covers 7,500, and $139 covers 25,000, while month to month runs $17, $39, $99, and $199 (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). The free plan covers 25 contacts since March 2026. The full math is in ManyChat pricing explained.
  • AI gates at $29 a month either way: bundled into Pro on new plans ($39 month to month), a $29 add-on on legacy plans. Its AI Comments feature writes tone-matched public replies, but it is Instagram only, positive comments only, and in beta (manychat.com and help.manychat.com, checked July 2026).
  • There is no YouTube anywhere in ManyChat.

The trade for a solo creator is time. Every keyword campaign in ManyChat is an automation you build, test, and maintain in the flow builder, and the contact meter runs while you do. There is a 14-day free trial on its Essential and Pro plans if you want to find out whether that workflow suits you (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026).

So Meta's free tool changes the ManyChat question. It used to be "is comment-to-DM worth $14 to $29 a month on annual billing," and the answer was often yes because there was no free way to get it. Now the entry mechanic costs nothing, and the question is "is the flow builder worth it." For a team running WhatsApp campaigns and multi-step funnels, it can be. For a solo creator who only ever used the comment-to-DM piece, Meta just turned that piece into a $0 feature.

Where BetterReply sits

BetterReply is built for the creator who hits the other edge: an audience on more platforms than Meta owns, and replies that need to sound like a person rather than a template. It puts Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs, YouTube comments, Threads comments, LinkedIn page comments and personal DMs, and email on Pro and Team into one inbox, threaded per person.

  • Keyword comment-to-DM with no flow builder. You write the keyword and the message once. On Instagram and Facebook it sends the DM and posts a public handoff reply under the comment; on YouTube, Threads, and LinkedIn it posts a public reply with your link.
  • AI drafts every reply in your voice and learns from your edits. You approve, or let the safe ones send themselves. That covers the whole inbox, not just keyword hits, which is the part no template automation touches.
  • Flat pricing, unlimited contacts, AI on every tier, so a viral month costs the same as a quiet one. Plans start at $29 a month, founding members lock $19 for life while the first 100 spots last, and there is a 7-day trial.
  • No billing surprises. New purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, and when AI credits run out the AI pauses and asks; it never surprise-bills you.

It also posts and schedules to those platforms, plus TikTok video, from the same place. The bet behind all of it is that replying to everyone, everywhere, in your own voice is the growth channel, which is the case reply marketing makes in full.

How to choose

Stick with Meta's free tool if

Instagram and Facebook are your whole public presence, a fixed DM per keyword covers your funnels, and you are fine answering the rest of the inbox by hand. That describes plenty of creators, and $0 beats every paid tool for them. Check the two undocumented details above on your own page first, and keep your keyword casing consistent everywhere you tell people to comment.

Pick ManyChat if

You need multi-step sequences, WhatsApp, SMS, or Telegram, and you have the patience for a flow builder. Budget for the active-contact meter as your audience grows. It is also fair to stay put if you already run sequences there that pay for themselves; nothing in this article says tear down working automations.

Pick BetterReply if

Your audience spans YouTube or LinkedIn as well as Instagram and Facebook, you want the DM and the public reply written in your own voice, and you want one inbox where every comment and DM gets answered. Of the three options here, it is the only one that covers YouTube at all.

The free tool is a genuine gift to single-platform creators with simple funnels, and the first half of this article is a straight recommendation to use it. The moment your audience spreads past Meta's apps, or a fixed template starts costing you conversations, BetterReply is the step up built for exactly that creator. A reasonable path is to start free today and move up only when you feel a specific edge, because by then you will know exactly which tool the edge points to. To watch the mechanic run end to end first, start with how to automatically reply to Instagram comments.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instagram comment-to-DM automation free now?+

Yes. Meta Business Suite includes a comment-to-message automation at no charge that sends a message reply when a comment on your post contains keywords or phrases you set (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026). Setup is desktop only, and the message is a fixed template you write yourself.

Do I still need ManyChat if Meta's comment-to-message is free?+

Not for basic keyword comment-to-DM on Instagram and Facebook; Meta covers that at $0. ManyChat still earns its $14 to $29 a month on annual billing if you need multi-step sequences in its flow builder or channels like WhatsApp, SMS, and Telegram (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). It has no YouTube support.

What can Meta's free Inbox Automations not do?+

They send fixed templates you write yourself, with no AI drafting. Keyword message automations cap at 5 case-sensitive keywords each and can wait 15 minutes before sending, and coverage stops at Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads, and email are not covered (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026).

Does the free Meta tool cover YouTube comments?+

No. Meta Inbox Automations covers Meta surfaces only, and ManyChat does not cover YouTube either. Of the tools in this comparison, BetterReply is the one that answers YouTube comments, alongside Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and LinkedIn, from $29 a month flat.

What does BetterReply add over Meta's free comment-to-DM?+

BetterReply drafts every reply in your voice instead of sending one fixed message, covers Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn, and email in one inbox, and pairs each keyword DM on Instagram and Facebook with a public handoff reply. Pricing is flat with unlimited contacts: $29 a month, or $19 for life for the first 100 founding members.
