Can you schedule posts on Instagram? Yes, and here are the limits

August 6, 2026 · 7 min read

Yes, and you do not need to pay anyone. Instagram schedules reels, photos and carousels from inside its own app, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days ahead, as long as your account is public (help.instagram.com, checked August 2026). What the built-in scheduler will not do is post anywhere except Instagram, schedule a story, or work with product tags and collaborative posts. Those three gaps are the reason most people end up looking for a tool.

Disclosure

We build BetterReply, which schedules to Instagram and five other platforms. This page starts with the free options because for a lot of people the free options are genuinely enough, and it says so.

Can you schedule posts on Instagram without a third party tool?

You can, and this surprises people who last checked a few years ago. Instagram used to hide scheduling behind Creator Studio and then behind a business account. Now it sits in the normal posting screen. Meta's own help page puts it plainly: "If you have a public Instagram account, you can plan ahead by scheduling reels, photos and carousel posts from the Instagram app."

The limits are published too, and they are more generous than most people assume: "You can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance." If you are one person posting three or four times a week to a single account, that is the whole problem solved for nothing.

The short answer

Public account, Instagram app, up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days out. Reels, photos and carousels only. Free.

How do you schedule an Instagram post from the app?

Six taps, and the option is buried one screen deeper than you would expect, which is why so many people believe it does not exist.

  1. 1Tap the Create button at the top left of the Instagram app.
  2. 2Pick Post or Reel.
  3. 3Add your photo, video or carousel and edit it as normal.
  4. 4Write the caption on the final screen.
  5. 5Tap More options. This is the step everyone misses.
  6. 6Turn on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel, then set the date and time.

Scheduled posts sit in a list you can edit or delete until they go out. If you change your mind at 6am about a 9am post, you can still get to it.

What will Instagram's built-in scheduler not do?

Four things, and whether they matter depends entirely on how you work.

  • Stories. Reels, photos and carousels are the schedulable list. Stories are not on it, so daily story posting stays manual.
  • Anything with a product tag, a collaborator, a paid partnership label or a fundraiser.Meta's wording is that these "aren't compatible with scheduled content at this time." If you sell through product tags or post collabs, those go out by hand.
  • Any other platform. The same reel on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and LinkedIn means opening four more apps and uploading four more times.
  • The comments afterwards. Scheduling is the easy half. The post lands at 9am, sixty people reply, and you are back in the app anyway.

The last one is the one I would think hardest about. Scheduling saves you the 9am upload. It does not save you the 9:20 pile of comments, and the comments are where people ask how much it costs and where to buy.

Why a scheduled Instagram post did not go out

Four causes cover almost every case, and none of them is a bug.

  • The account went private. Scheduling requires a public account. Switch to private and the queue stops.
  • The post has something unschedulable attached.Product tags, a collaborator, a paid partnership label or a fundraiser. Meta's wording is that these "aren't compatible with scheduled content at this time," and the app is not always loud about it at the moment you schedule.
  • You hit 25 in a day. Rare, but launch weeks and bulk carousel days get closer than you would think.
  • The audio. If a reel publishes silently, check the track. Music availability differs by account type on Instagram, so a sound you can use on one account is not guaranteed on another.

If none of those applies, delete the scheduled post and rebuild it rather than editing it. It is faster than diagnosing it.

Is Meta Business Suite better than scheduling in the app?

It is better for two specific jobs and worse for everything else. Business Suite is Meta's free desktop tool, and because it sits across both platforms it schedules a Facebook post and an Instagram post in one go. Writing captions on a real keyboard instead of a phone is also a genuine quality of life upgrade.

It also does basic keyword automation. You can set up a rule so a comment containing a chosen word gets a private message back. It is capped at five keywords per automation, has to be set up on desktop, sends one fixed template with no variation, and covers Facebook and Instagram only (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026). For a single lead magnet on one account, that is a real free option and worth trying before you pay for anything.

Where it falls down is everything outside Meta. No YouTube, no LinkedIn, no TikTok, no Threads. And the interface has a reputation it has earned.

When is a paid scheduler actually worth it?

There is a clean line here, and it is not about follower count. It is about how many places you post.

One platform, a few posts a week, no product tags: the Instagram app does this for free and a subscription would be waste. I would not sell anyone a tool for that.

Three or more platforms is where the arithmetic changes. The same reel going to Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Threads and LinkedIn is six uploads, six caption rewrites and six different aspect ratio arguments. That is the morning gone, every time. Tools exist because that job does not shrink on its own.

The second reason is the one people underrate. Once you post in six places, the replies also arrive in six places, and nobody checks all six. The cheap schedulers do give you somewhere to answer comments, to be fair to them. Where the line falls is direct messages: below about $30 a month, almost nothing covers those. A smaller set of tools handle the posting and the replies together, which is the half of the job that actually turns a follower into a customer.

What does it cost?

OptionCostSchedules toHandles the replies
Instagram appFreeInstagram onlyNo
Meta Business SuiteFreeInstagram and FacebookBasic keyword replies, 5 keywords, one template
Buffer Essentials$5 per channel per month, annual billingTen platformsComments only, no DMs
BetterReply$29 a month flatInstagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn, TikTokComments and DMs in one inbox, drafted in your voice

Buffer's pricing is per channel, so six platforms is $30 a month rather than $5 (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026). Its Community inbox is included on every plan including the free one, but it covers comments and not direct messages, which is worth knowing before you buy it as an inbox.

What I would actually do

If Instagram is your only platform

Use the app. Schedule a week at a time on a Sunday, keep the 25 a day limit in your back pocket for launch weeks, and spend the money you did not spend on something else.

If you post to Instagram and Facebook

Meta Business Suite, free, on a desktop. Set up one comment keyword automation while you are in there.

If you post to three or more platforms

Pay for something. At that point you are spending several hours a week on upload mechanics, and any tool at $20 to $30 pays for itself in the first fortnight. Look for one that also pulls the comments and DMs back into one place, because otherwise you have solved the cheaper half of the problem. BetterReply does both halves for $29 a month flat, and the first 100 founding members lock $19 for life.

Frequently asked questions

Can you schedule posts on Instagram for free?+

Yes. Instagram schedules reels, photos and carousel posts from inside its own app at no cost, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days in advance. Your account has to be public (help.instagram.com, checked August 2026).

How far in advance can you schedule an Instagram post?+

Up to 30 days. Meta caps it at 25 scheduled posts per day within that 30-day window, which is far more than most creators will ever queue.

Where is the schedule button on Instagram?+

On the final screen before you publish, under More options. Tap Create, pick Post or Reel, add your content and caption, tap More options, then turn on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel. Most people never find it because it sits one screen deeper than they expect.

Can you schedule Instagram stories?+

Not in the Instagram app. The schedulable types are reels, photos and carousel posts. Stories are not included, so daily story posting stays manual unless you use a third party tool that supports them.

Why can I not schedule a post with a product tag?+

Meta excludes several post types from scheduling. Their wording is that product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers "aren't compatible with scheduled content at this time." Those have to be posted by hand.

Do I need a paid scheduler if I only post to Instagram?+

No. If Instagram is your only platform and you do not need stories or product tags scheduled, the built-in scheduler covers it for free. Paid tools earn their price once you post to three or more platforms, or once the comments and DMs coming back are more than you can keep up with.
